I was looking at some of the blogs of the people who are following me, and a lot of them are fellow writers. Some of them are putting short stories and poems on their websites, while others are sticking to poetry. This has been giving me ideas for my own site.
I don’t want to put short stories up here because I am still trying to (1) sell them to magazines or (2) have them converted into comics. In order to convert them to comics, I need to pay an artist to draw them. With that in mind, I will need to try selling the comics so I can AT LEAST recoup what I spend on their creation. As for the novel, I’d like to try getting that published too. (Some of my hipster friends might consider me a “sell-out” because I want *gasp* make MONEY from doing something I love, but for my thoughts on that attitude, you can see my blog with the subject line “Selling Out???”)
So that leaves poetry. There is no way ALL the poems I have ever written will be accepted and published by magazines. Not only is this because of the content, but it is also because of their length: some of them run 5-8 pages long. Hell, I’ve even written a few that are “epics,” stretching out to 30 pages and beyond.
Once upon a time I considered publishing these poems as chapbooks (tiny books of poetry that run no more than 40 pages). I looked into places that publish chapbooks, and it really isn’t worth it. In most cases you have to pay for them to print the book, which means you would have to sell a lot of copies just to break even. Since I’m already facing that dilemma with the comics, I don’t want to have to go through it with the poetry as well. Not only that, but a lot of these places charge READING fees. Let’s see here: I have to pay you to read my poetry, and then you might turn around and not even publish it? No thanks!
Therefore, I think I will start posting some of my poems here. What I’ll do is post some of the standard, one-page poems first. After a while I will add some that run a couple pages. Then, if I feel like the enthusiasm is there, I will start posting some of those that are epic in length…a little at a time, of course.
I hope this idea will interest some of you out there.
