Rainbow on the Wall-New Song

Sometimes I write songs that I can explain to people. I know where I got the idea because it was something I lived, but every now and then, I write one that defies explanation. For example, “Touch of Her Hand” opens with these lines:

When I died in the subway station,
they couldn’t notify my next relation
because I had no ID in my wallet.

Well, having never died in a subway station before, I can’t explain what that song means. The same holds true of this new tune, “Rainbow on the Wall.” It is about a man who is taking care of his terminally ill wife. In reality my wife had a disability, but not a terminal one. So all I can say is that maybe I just took her illness and intensified it. Whatever the case, I think I came up with a warm, beautiful, sad, but moving song. Here are the lyrics; I will post a performance later.

*******************************************************************
Moving slow, sure, and steady,
with the grace of a goddess in her walk.
Then came the blow for which we weren’t ready,
so crippling that we couldn’t even talk.

I remember meeting her in the doorway
of a crystal palace overlooking a diamond sea.
Then reality crashed in like a rock through a window.
Now this vision of her is only a memory.

Our clothes smell like hospital waiting rooms.
Our lives are measured out in morphine drips.
Mirror-faced people reflect our pain.
From the cup of misery, we all take a sip.

Limbs get tangled up in IV’s.
The rhythm of our life is kept by the beep of the LCD.
Every moment of our life is sterilized.
Every time her eyes close, I’m petrified.

She reaches toward me now
with hands made of glass,
and the sunlight,
fractured by her transparent skin,
is rearranged as a rainbow on the wall,
as a rainbow on the wall.

She reaches toward me now
with hands made of glass,
and the sunlight,
fractured by her transparent skin,
is rearranged as a rainbow on the wall,
as a rainbow on the wall.
